996  Spec Racing” Class Rules for 2010

Class Purpose

The purpose of this Spec Class is to provide a competitive racing class wherein the cars are reliable and performance potential is as even as possible. These rules are intended to control costs and remove any performance advantage from the cars so that driving ability and suspension set up are the greatest factors in determining race winners. This class will be referred to as the 996 SPEC class.

General Rules

All parts must be factory stock from one of the eligible years, except where otherwise noted. In general, modifications which improve aesthetics, access to systems, safety or reliability are allowed and encouraged provided they offer no performance advantage. There are no exceptions.

Any modification not expressly covered by these rules is prohibited.

NO MODIFICATION OF SPEC PARTS PERMITTED 

NON-STOCK PARTS CAN HAVE NO POTENTIAL FOR AERODYNAMIC IMPACT

1999-2001 Porsche 996 Coupe . 3.4 litre

2002-2004 Porsche 996 Coupe   3.6 litre

NO CROSS-CHASSIS PART SWAPS 

Safety

General

All safety requirements are subject to the rules of the event sanctioning body.

 

 

 

Roll Cages

Roll cages to comply with the rule of the sanctioning body.

Weight

Minimum weight requirements must be met immediately following all qualifying sessions and races. The choice of which systems/accessories to remove, in order to lighten the chassis, is free. Batteries may be swapped for a lighter type, but must be securely mounted in the stock location. Minimum weight includes driver. Ballast to meet minimum weight must not exceed 100lbs,  All ballast must be bolted to the floor of the passenger foot-well.

Passenger seat considered 25lb ballast

             Minimum weight = 99-01  3.4 litre    2850 lbs. Including driver

                                           02-04  3.6 litre    3040 lbs including driver

           

Chassis

Seam welding of the chassis is not allowed.

 

Engine

General

All engines and their mechanical and electrical components must remain stock. No solid engine or transmission mounts are allowed. Engine and Transmission must remain in their stock location. X-51 power kit not allowed.

Cooling System

Ethylene glycol-based anti-freeze is prohibited. Distilled water is recommended as a replacement. Use of additives, such as Redline Water Wetter is permitted. Radiator fans may be direct wired with a switch.

Radiator

One additional radiator, placed in the center of the grill area is allowed. 996  or 996 center radiator is allowed as an addition only to the stock radiators.

Oil Cooling

The factory oil cooling system must remain stock, except for the following allowed modifications:

§       An external oil cooler is allowed

§       X-51 Oil pan allowed

§       Accusump oil accumulator allowed

 

Air Filter

No modifications to the factory engine air inlet or intake system.  Drop in factory size/style replacement air filters only.

Cold Air Intake

Non-stock intake enhancements not allowed.

Fuel Tank and Filler

Fuel filler may be moved to front trunk compartment as per USA-GT rules using part:Kelly Moss part TBA

Pulley/Belt System 

Under drive crank pulley allowed, minimum 4" diameter. No modification allowed to: water pump, power steering pump alternator, idler pulleys etc and all must be operable and belt driven.

Computer Engine Management System

The stock computer engine management system must remain stock. No other engine management system may be added. No aftermarket chips are allowed. No re-mapping or flashing of factory chips is allowed.

Exhaust System

Exhaust manifolds must remain stock. All other components are free.

Catalytic converters may be removed.

Transmission / Differential

Transmission

v. G96/00

Must remain stock with unmodified components (no coatings or non-stock parts).
May be rebuilt but must retain stock gear ratios

 

Transmission Cooling 

Transmission coolers allowed

Clutch

Any approved clutch disc and clutch cover (pressure plate) may be used. Approved lightened flywheels are allowed.

Approved clutch kits:

Approved lightened flywheels:

o      Aasco: 106411-11

LSD

Limited slip differential is allowed

Differential

Ring and pinion ratio must remain stock

Shifters

Short Shift kits are allowed but not recommended. GT3 shifter and cables allowed.

Suspension/Steering Components

All suspension components not otherwise listed must be stock factory parts. All suspension components must be mounted in the unmodified factory original mounting locations. No urethane bushings are allowed.

Shock Tower Braces

No modification of the shock tower is allowed.

No Strut braces.

Mounts

Tarett Engineering front and rear monoball camberplates allowed.

o      Front - #996FSMT

o      Rear -  #996RSMT

No additional solid mounts permitted.

A-Arms

Approved adjustable A-arms are allowed for the purpose of increasing negative camber in the front and rear wheels. The approved adjustable A-Arms are Porsche Factory Parts only for the GT3 “Street”.

Springs and Shocks

Shocks/Springs: JRZ 996 Spec Package

Bilstein PSS9 may be grandfathered if purchased, installed and raced prior to Jan 1, 2010.

All spring and shock systems must mount in the factory original location only.

Sway Bars

o      Front: Porsche GT3 part no. 996-343-701-90 or Tarett Engineer 996FSBA

o      Rear: GT3 part no. 996-333-701-90, Tarett Engineering 996RSBA bar and drop link kits

 

No modification to mounting points.

Drop Links

(modified stock allows for a shortening of 2” for use with GT3 front sway bar)

Ride Height

Any ride height, providing that no metal part of the vehicle touches the ground.

Wheels and Tires

Tires
 Hoosier R6

o      Front: 245x35x18

o      Rear:  285x30x18

Wheels & Trackwidth

Any 18” wheel  (8” front/10” rear) allowed provided front and rear track do not exceed : 

o      Front: 68.5 inches

o      Rear: 70” inches

 

Spacers allowed.

 

Wheel & Tire Weight

Wheel /tire combined weight must be equal to or greater than:  

o      Front -    40.5 lb minimum

o      Rear     47.6 lb minimum 

Steel bolts or lugnuts are required. Hubs may be converted to studs in place of wheel bolts.

 

New Tire Maximum

 

Maximum, four (4), new tires per competitor per event.  An Event will be defined as  "Up to:  two (2) each, qualifying, time trials  and up to (4) sprint races."   Any tire may be used for practice sessions.   A damaged tire can be replaced .

            Not applicable to Enduros.

 

 

Brake System

Brake pads are free.

Steel braided brake lines are allowed.

Brake dust guards may be removed.

The emergency brake, lever and/or cables and all associated parts may be removed.

Brake cooling systems are allowed, provided they use only air to cool with. Air may be vented through the front air dam for brake cooling.

Stock replacement rotor, steel construction. One piece design. Drilled or slotted allowed."

Brake calipers must remain completely stock and sit in factory location.

Battery

Stock location, min 10lbs.

Data Acquisition and In-car timing equipment is allowed

 

Appearance

The class nomenclature of 996 SPEC shall appear on each side and the rear of the car in 4” contrasting letters. Car numbers shall be issued by the sanctioning club hosting the event. Numbers shall comply with the rules of the sanctioning body.

Air dams and bumpers must be either stock or approved replica units. No Carbon fiber is allowed.

Approved front bumpers:

o      Stock (with or w/o cutout for additional radiator

o      Getty or factory GT3 front bumper 

Front deck lid must remain stock.

Splitters may not extend forward of the front bumper, nor lower than 3” from the bottom of the front bumper. The front bumper must be located in the factory position and cannot be moved in any way.

Factory or factory replacement “Aero Kit” side skirts allowed. Porsche part #996 559 983/984

Sunroof delete panel or factory steel “non sunroof” skin may be used

Rear Window must be stock in appearance with no venting (can be lexan material).

License plates, license plate frames, license plate lights, and insignias and emblems may be removed.

Hood pins are recommended. Stock hood latches may be disabled or removed.

All headlights and taillights must remain stock. Headlights may be covered.

Rear wing…… Getty Design 996 Spec Wing & decklid assembly.  (Fiberglass, no carbon fiber)

Rear bumper license plate area may be cut out to 27" wide by 7" tall max.  Tow hook hole max 6" x 3". No other modifications permitted.

Any exterior modification that is determined to have no performance enhancing value is allowed. This includes but is not limited to radiator inlet screens, side inlet scoops and screens, ventilation ducts to brakes or to the passenger compartment.

Front bumper may be top vented ala GT3 Cup to allow for additional or rerouted heat venting of radiator.

Interior

The driver or passenger seats must be replaced with any seat suitable for competition, including a racing-type bucket seat. Factory seat tracks may be modified, reinforced or removed to facilitate replacement mountings provided they perform no other function.

Factory dashboard instrument pod must remain intact. Additional gauges may be added. Factory navigation systems and all airbags may be removed. Lower portion of the dashboard may be removed.

Any steering wheel may be used except wood rimmed type steering wheels. Quick release steering hubs are allowed.

Steering wheel lock must be removed.

The air conditioning/heating system may be removed.

Factory engine cover must remain in the stock and latched position.

All interior items may be removed except where otherwise noted. The driver’s side floor mat must be removed. Both doors may be “gutted.” Factory door beams must remain intact or NASCAR style side intrusion door bars must be added.

All insulating material may be removed from the interior.

Side and rear windows may be replaced with lexan

Rules Revision Process

The 996 Spec Racing Rulebook will be revised on an annual basis following the the following guidelines. 

July 1- August 31
Proposals for new rules or modifications to existing rules will be posted to a Rules Revisions forum on the 996 Spec Racing Website. Access to this forum will require a special permission which will be granted only to 996  Spec drivers and builders who have been active in the series within the prior twelve months.

September
Rules proposals and discussions will be reviewed and decided by the Rules Committee. 

October 1
Rules changes for the following season will be announced and posted to the Official website. The Rules Committee will consist of 2 builders, 2 drivers and the series director. At any time during the competitive season, should there be a need for immediate rules change (spec part not available, over-looked loophole being exploited etc) the Rules Committee shall meet and make a decision on that issue. Best efforts via email and website posts will be made to inform all drivers of any changes.
